How to block those annoying Facebook Page deletion messages

If you manage a Facebook Page, you will have noticed the increase in the amount of scam messages flooding your inbox lately, especially if you’re running paid ads. It’s driving me crazy!

These messages prey on the insecurities of small business owners, claiming copyright infringement or page deletion threats, hoping to lure you into phishing sites disguised as official notifications. Unfortunately, they do work a lot more often than you might think…

If you’ve already identified them as spam and scam then great, you’re not clicking on them. But they are still annoying, so read on and I’ll teach you how to create an easy automation to send those messages straight to spam without bugging you first.

First, let’s take a good look at how these messages work:

  • The bait: scam messages leverage urgency, often mentioning copyright infringement or page deletion threats.

  • The hook: they direct you to fake Facebook profiles or phishing sites resembling official notifications.

  • The sting: entering details on these sites can compromise your Facebook account and even steal personal information.

Best thing to do is avoid any contact so here’s how to send those Facebook scam messages straight into your spam folder:

  1. Head to Business Suite and in the left-hand menu choose ‘inbox’ and then tap on the little automation icon at the top.

  2. Click ‘create automation’ in the top right.

3. Choose ‘start from scratch’ to create a new inbox automation.

4. Choose messenger and/or instagram depending on where you’re getting the messages.

5. Name your automation, I chose ‘scam bam’

6. Choose when ‘new message received’

7. Choose ‘keywords’ as the trigger for the automation. You get to add in your keywords next so have a look at the messages you’ve been getting from Facebook scammers to grab a few.

8. Enter common scammer terms like "trademark", "infringement", “intellectual”, “deactivated” or "deletion" in the ‘message text contains all of the following keywords’ field.

9. Select action: in ‘take this action’ choose ‘mark as’ and then ‘move to spam’ to banish those messages to the digital abyss.

10. Save your automation and watch the spam disappear!

Remember:

  • Update your automation with new keywords as scammers evolve their tactics.

  • Report any suspicious messages to Facebook directly if you do see them.

By following these steps, you can reclaim your Facebook inbox and focus on what truly matters: engaging with your audience and building your online community.

Additional tips:

  • Share this guide with other page managers to spread the word and fight spam together!

  • Stay vigilant and educate yourself about common online scams to keep your data safe.
